Overview
We had numerous complaints regarding the procedures on the application portal. To assist our new applicants in 2021, we decided to shoot a tutorial video, to guide the applicants through the procedures to apply for our Ph.D. program via the application portal. A 10-minutes tutorial video was produced to go through the interfaces, procedures and details of the application portal.
You can watch the video below.
Conception Development
In order to guide our potential applicants going through the different procedures in the application portal, a first-person perspective tutorial video was recommended. After getting myself familiar with the application portal, I drew the storyboard to draft the beginning, duration and end of the video. When I had the concept of learning objectives and the narrations, I was directed to our digital teaching lab and started my shooting.
No talking head? Then what can you do?
According to Mayer’s study, students do not necessarily learn better when the lecturer’s talking head is appeared beside the contents. Moreover, the study also showed that the appearance of the lecturer’s body, first-person perspective, as well as moving your eyes and gestures can help learners to build knowledge. In order to construct instructional values, I decided to show the lecturer (in this case, me) and indicate what they will learn in the video by my gestures, eyes contacts, and first-person perspective.
Results and Giveaway
The video has been demonstrated on the YouTube channel and potential applicants are applying through our application portal with the video attached.
